Unpacking Hearing Privilege: Online Course Opportunity! (August)

The Peer Recovery Center of Excellence (PR CoE) is excited to provide this learning opportunity for the Peer Recovery Support workforce!

In partnership with Niki Integrated Networking Consultants, we're offering a limited number of registrations for the online course Unpacking Hearing Privilege.

Unpacking Hearing Privilege will support members of the Peer Recovery Support workforce to better understand hearing privilege, recognized their biases, and provided tools to create more inclusive and compassionate peer recovery support services.

Space is limited and this is our last offering of this course!

From May - August, on the 15th of each month, we will open registration for 9 individuals for this self-paced, online course. After registering, participants will receive an email with a link and password to enroll in the course. This is not a webinar or live virtual event. With the link and password, participants will be able to access the course at any time and complete it at their own pace. Upon completion of the Unpacking Hearing Privilege course, participants will receive a certificate of completion from Niki Integrated Networking Consultants and a link to an evaluation from the PR CoE.

Course Description:

Unpacking Hearing Privilege is a self-paced course designed for individuals who interact with or aim to include members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) community within their services. Through interactive lessons and activities, participants will deepen their understanding of hearing privilege and its impact on communication and inclusivity. The course will review historic oppression of DHH people, discuss audism, teach employees how to unlearn biases towards visible communication, and explore strategies for creating inclusive environments in the workplace. Learners will also be educated on the societal impact of hearing privilege, various identities within the DHH community, and the impact of a hearing-centric focus in medical and healthcare settings. The course aims to foster a more inclusive and understanding attitude towards those with hearing differences, sparking a desire for change and equality for individuals with hearing loss.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of hearing privilege and its impact on communication and inclusivity
  • Recognize the historic oppression of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals
  • Learn about audism and unlearn biases toward visible communication
  • Navigate the part ASL interpreters contribute to power dynamics
  • Explore strategies for creating inclusive environments in the workplace
  • Advocate for change and equality for individuals with hearing loss
  • Explain the various identities within the DHH community
