Recovery Community Organization (RCO) Regional Listening Sessions
The Peer Recovery Center of Excellence is inviting you to a 60-minute listening session on capacity building about Recovery Community Organizations (RCOs). We need to hear from you to learn more about the strengths and challenges in RCO development and sustainability in your region.
Join us as we bring together staff, volunteers, and stakeholders in recovery organizations that conduct peer recovery training, develop peer leadership, plan recovery conferences, and/or facilitate networks of peer recovery leaders.
Goals of the listening sessions:
- To identify regional challenges to the overall development of RCOs
- To assess the current activity in the region around the development and delivery of peer recovery support services
- To identify topics and competencies relevant for various RCOs (e.g. urban, rural, suburban)

Nell Hurley is a member of the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence's (CoE) Peer-Led Steering Committee. A woman in long-term recovery, Nell has worked in the peer recovery space for over a decade and she served as the founding director of Minnesota's first RCO, Minnesota Recovery Connection. |

About the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence:
In 2020, SAMHSA funded a national, peer-run training and technical assistance center for addiction recovery peer support to the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC).
UMKC, along with our partners—Nationa lCouncil for Behavioral Health, University of Texas, and University of Wisconsin—worked to appoint a peer-led steering committee for the new Center. Peer voice is at the core of our work and guides our mission to enhance the field of substance use peer support services.
Working with our peer-led steering committee, we have become known as the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence. We have four focus areas:
- Clinical Integration of Peers into Non-Traditional Settings
- Recovery Community Organization Capacity Building
- Peer Workforce Development
- Evidence-Based Practice & Practice-Based Evidence Dissemination
Training and events will center around these focus areas. We also accept TA requests from anyone in need of training from across the nation for technical assistance relating to substance use disorder peer support services.
