Nonprofit Basics Series: Grant Writing Basics

Session Description:

Grant writing is essential to survival in the nonprofit world. In session 1, participants will learn techniques for acquiring funding while they peer review grant products as a practice to critically reflect on their own grants. Participants will also learn the basics of federal grant writing, including the process of writing a grant, grant structure, timeline, materials, approvals, and requirements for submission. In session 2, participants will explore writing a grant outline and proposal for their organization.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn techniques essential for obtaining grants
  • Review examples of funded grants and consider areas for improvement
  • Describe the requirements for submitting a federal grant application using a checklist approach such as SAMS or DUNS approvals, and other submission requirements
  • Review a SAMHSA RFA and understand the essential information presented
  • Draft a proposal outline for the SAMHSA RFA for your organization
  • Discuss challenges and solutions to writing a federal grant and the capacity and resources necessary
